The American Sportsman

I wasn’t going to blog about this, but my office administrator told me that if people only wanted to hear about dentistry, they could go to the American Dental Association’s website.
I went to North Dakota last fall – as I have done once or twice a year for the last decade – to go pheasant hunting. These trips are a result of a childhood dream that came from an old television show on ABC called The American Sportsman. Commentator Curt Gowdy and others would take celebrities outdoors on fishing and hunting trips. I remember one episode in particular when Gowdy was bird hunting with Bing Crosby. The whole activity really caught my attention.
In addition to The American Sportsman, my grandfather was a bird hunter. As a child I would marvel at the beauty of the guns in his gun cabinet. Some of them are mine today.
There is nothing like walking thousands of acres of open fields pheasant hunting with my dogs. It’s intense, it’s relaxing, and it’s a great workout all at the same time.
What do I do with the birds? I have done many things with them over the years. This year I made a huge pot of split pea soup with grilled pheasant. I kind of wish I hadn’t shared any of it…
