Thinking Straight II

Values

I heard a sermon when I was a young man about how our checkbook reflects our values. The speaker made a very convincing case and I believed it. After 31 years in private practice I believe it more than ever.

Dentistry is expensive isn’t it?

That and the fear of pain are probably the main reasons people choose not to do recommended treatment. We can talk about avoiding pain at another blog but let’s talk expense. To me it’s a matter of perspective, ie: how much do I really value having my teeth look, feel, and function well. Easy for me to say, I’m not paying the bill, and besides I’m a rich dentist, right?

Let’s see what your checkbook says.

How much do you spend on your car’s purchase, lease, maintenance, options and fuel? How much do you spend on your hair and nails, cable, vacations, entertainment, hobbies?  Oh yeah, I just took my dogs for their annual checkup and vaccinations this morning.

I should have been a vet.

By the way, are you a Starbuck’s addict? Here’s the kicker though. In most cases, when dentistry is done well it lasts longer than most cars, haircuts, pets, vacations and caffeine highs. If you don’t value your teeth, that’s really okay with me. Just make sure you have perspective.

Honest dentistry done well is a good value!!!
